Decorating your Home Gym

This is where the fun starts! Decorating your home gym to your own tastes is one of the big benefits of working out at home. Many people start planning their gym by choosing the equipment. But you will find it much easier if you spend a little bit of time thinking about the decoration and fittings of your home gym before your actually purchase any equipment. This is much easier to do if you don't have to be constantly moving heavy equipment.

Color and Lighting

Many people have their gyms set up in spare areas of the house such as the basement. These are not always the most welcoming of places. Try to make the room as pleasant as possible by painting the walls an off-white color and having plenty of lighting. If there is natural light then make use of it. Artificial light can be supplied by uplighters fixed to the walls and a main overhead light with a dimmer switch. Avoid fluorescent lighting, which can give a harsh light that is not pleasant to work in for long periods.

Flooring

Many people forget to consider their floor coverings. Decorate the floor with rubber gym matting to muffle noise and provide a safe work out environment. Ideally you should cover the whole of the gym with this type of flooring. It can be obtained on a roll or in sections. If you are on a budget, you can just get mats to fit underneath equipment and for your free weights area.

Mirrors

Mirrors are not just for posing, they are an essential way to check that you are lifting weights in the correct manner. You can also use them to keep check on your progress. Aim to get full-length mirrors so that you can see your whole body. You can either approach a specialist glassmaker or go to your DIY store to find some suitable ones.

Motivation

To stay motivated you can put a whiteboard on the wall with your fitness goals on it. As you reach each of your targets, check them off. Motivational posters can also be inspirational to some people. These can be photographs of the type of body you are aiming to achieve. Remember to have a large clock so that you can keep track of your workout. You can also include space for a TV or music system to keep you entertained during your workout.
