Free Weights or Weight Machine?
When you're setting up your home gym a common question to ask is whether to go for free weights or a weight machine. There are advantages to both and some people would argue that you should indeed have both. But many of us are on a budget and can only buy one piece of equipment at a time.
Free Weights
Free weights consist of dumbbells and barbells. They are more versatile than a weights machine, allowing you to perform a wide variety of different exercises. Many experienced weight trainers swear by free weights because they work several different muscles groups at once. As well as using muscles to lift the weight, there are other muscles groups needed to provide balance and support.
Free weights can also be highly affordable. You can start off with just a small outlay and gradually build up your collection of equipment as your strength improves and finances allow.
Weights Machine
The main advantage of a weights machine is that they are safer to use. This is particularly important if you are working out by yourself. You are not lifting heavy weight over you, so there is no chance of injuring yourself by dropping a bar or dumbbell.
A machine also helps you to maintain form. This means that you will be exercising in an effective and safe manner.
If you want to specifically target a certain muscle group, a weight machine will allow you to do this better than free weights. However you should always ensure that you exercise the opposing muscle group as well, to prevent imbalances. For example, if you are exercising you hamstrings, you should also exercise your quadriceps.
Which is Best for You
If you are a novice working out at home, then choosing a weights machine could be a good option. If you join a healthclub gym, the staff will probably introduce you to the weight machines first. Then as your experience grows, they will show you how to use the free weights.
If you are already experienced then a set of free weights for your homegym will be an ideal solution.
